Sunnyvale and Los Altos Infrastructure Upgrades

Cal Water is working on two major water infrastructure upgrades to enhance water supply reliability and fire protection for customers in Sunnyvale and Los Altos. Crews are installing a total of approximately 8,590 feet of water main.

The first project consists of 3,390 feet of new water main, 112 new services, and 10 new fire hydrants in Sunnyvale along Carlisle Way, crossing Pauline Drive, Arleen Avenue, and Lillian Avenue. Simultaneously, in south Los Altos, crews are installing 5,200 feet of main, 49 new services, and 10 new fire hydrants along Grant Road, from Portland Avenue to Foothill Express Way, just east of Oak Avenue Elementary and Mountain View High School.

“Upgrades like these are what help strengthen our water system and have kept us serving our customers’ everyday and emergency needs for 100 years,” said Dawn Smithson, Los Altos Suburban District Manager. “Our proactive efforts to modernize our infrastructure help us continue to evolve and improve the way in which we serve, so that we can continue delivering safe, clean, and reliable water—both now and for future generations.”

The Sunnyvale improvement project, located west of Panama Park, replaces existing 4-inch main with 8-inch and 12-inch main; the Los Altos work replaces 10-inch main with 12-inch main to increase water flow and enhance firefighting capabilities in drier months. Both upgrades are expected to be completed by the end of July.

Crews are working Monday through Friday, with traffic control in place to assist motorists and reduce delays.

  • For the project on Carlisle Way, crews are working from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • For the project on Grand Road, crews are working from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Temporary asphalt will be applied until permanent paving is completed, which can be up to 30 days after project completion. This time delay is necessary to allow the trench to become fully compacted, so the road surface is smooth after permanent paving is completed.
