Installing smart water meters at landslide-area homes

Summary: Smart meters coming to landslide homes

Current status: Installation is in progress as of early March and will continue for about two months.

New meter upgrade brings multiple benefits to customers

Cal Water is pleased to inform you of an upcoming water infrastructure upgrade in the Rancho Palos Verdes landslide areas. Beginning in early March 2026 and over the next couple of months, we are undertaking a project to replace our customers’ water meters in and near the landslide area with smart water meters.

Benefits of the new smart meters, which use advanced metering infrastructure (AMI):

  • Have digital display registers
  • Help detect potential leaks on customers’ properties faster
  • Allow customers to monitor water use online

We will not need access to your home during the meter replacement, as the water meter is typically located in the front yard near the street. When our installation crew arrives at your property, we will attempt to make contact with you if you are home. The crew will then install the new meter, which requires we briefly interrupt water service. If water is being used at the time we are at your property, our installation team will be able to work with you to minimize any impact to your day.

We will also be at your property a couple days beforehand to clear out any debris from the meter box and prepare for the installation. While we may use a vacuum truck to clean out the meter box, the work will be isolated to the box and is not expected to disturb any surrounding land.

These new meters are an excellent tool and resource for our customers to both detect leaks on their properties faster and better understand their water use. Once your smart meter is installed, we encourage you to sign up for a free account at www.eyeonwater.com to see both current and historical water usage, obtain daily consumption averages, get conservation tips, and set customized alerts to help use water efficiently and be notified early of any potential leaks.

We will work hard to minimize any temporary inconvenience to you as we make this water system improvement that will serve you better and benefit our community for years to come.

What should you do?

In advance of our work, please remove any obstructions that may prevent access to your meter box, such as trimming shrubbery or moving vehicles.
