Portola Pipeline San Andreas Fault Crossing

While installing 2 miles of transmission main for the consolidation of Pump Stations 8 and 13 in Bear Gulch, another major milestone was achieved with the crossing of the San Andreas Fault in two locations. The combination of articulating ball joints and expanding or contracting teleflex couplings will sustain up to 15 feet of ground displacement in anticipation of a 7.8 magnitude seismic event. Cal Water Engineering worked with US Pipe to design and fabricate these two fittings that have never before been used together. Preston Pipelines was able to quickly install since the fittings have the same TR-Flex joint technology as the rest of the restrained joint pipeline. More information to follow in the next article of Engineering’s publication of Flow.
