Cal Water Warns Customers of Scam Targeting Bakersfield Residents

Cal Water is warning its Bakersfield-area customers of a scam aimed at allowing strangers into their homes. Scammers are posing as Cal Water representatives and asking to inspect and replace their plumbing fixtures.

Cal Water offers toilet replacement and bathroom fixture retrofit programs at times; however, utility representatives would not go door to door to solicit customers.

“Given the recent string of similar scams, we urge our customers to use extra caution when receiving unsolicited contact from individuals claiming to represent Cal Water or any other utility,” said Mike Mares, Cal Water District Manager. “Protecting the health and safety of our customers is our highest priority, and we want to ensure our customers do not fall victim to these schemes.”

According to Cal Water, employees always carry identification badges, and most wear uniforms and drive trucks bearing the Cal Water logo. The utility recommends that customers not allow anyone into their homes or provide any personal information without verification. For verification or if customers suspect a possible scam, they should call the Cal Water Customer Center at (661) 837-7200.
