East Bakersfield Water Infrastructure Upgrade Begins
As part of the utility’s commitment to ensuring critical infrastructure remains safe and reliable, Cal Water started an important water main replacement project in East Bakersfield today. This upgrade will ensure customers and firefighters continue to have the water they need for their everyday and emergency needs.
The project, which began this week and is expected take four months to complete, includes the installation of 3,500 feet of new 6-inch, 8-inch, and 12-inch PVC and ductile iron water main and 40 new individual customer service connections. Installation will take place at the following locations:
- Ridge Road, from Mt. Vernon Avenue to Jessie Street
- Jessie Street, from Ridge Road to Alameda Avenue
- Alameda Avenue, from San Luis Street to Milvia Street
- San Luis Street, from Alameda Avenue to Bernard Place
- Bernard Place, from San Luis Street to Crestview Drive
“As essential service workers, our crews are dedicated to our promise to deliver quality, service, and value to residents and businesses in East Bakersfield,” said Interim District Manager Tammy Kelly. “This important water infrastructure upgrade will enable us to continue delivering a reliable supply of safe, high-quality water both to our customers for their drinking, cooking, handwashing, and other household needs, and to first responders to protect the community in an emergency, both now and for many years to come.”
Construction will be performed Monday through Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Crews will make every effort to minimize traffic delays and temporary service interruptions so that residents continue to have the water they need during this time. Residents will be notified in advance of any planned shutdowns, which are normally scheduled between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Following installation, crews will conduct water quality testing before connecting existing individual customer service lines to the new water main. Crews will also restore all streets, sod, and landscaping impacted by the construction.
