Bakersfield: Phone scam targeting customer

Scam alertA Cal Water customer in Bakersfield reported receiving a phone call in Spanish demanding immediate payment of their water bill by credit card or money order to avoid disconnection.

Cal Water would not call a customer and specifically ask for payment to be made with a specific payment method. If Cal Water ever needed to contact you regarding non-payment, we would provide information for all available payment methods, which include in-person at Western Union pay stations or our Customer Center drop box, online through our web site, and pay-by-phone via our automated, toll-free phone payment line (1-866-734-0743).

If you receive a call or letter related to your water bill and are unsure whether it is legitimate, please do not deposit any checks, visit any payment location, or provide any credit card or personal information, and call your local Customer Center for verification.
