Harris Reservoir Project FAQ
What is the scope of the project?
Cal Water began constructing a 4-million-gallon storage tank in early November 2009 to replace the Harris Reservoir, which was placed in service prior to Cal Water taking ownership of the water system in 1983. The new tank, in conjunction with previously completed pump upgrades, will increase water pressure, enhance reliability and improve fire protection.
How long will the project take to complete?
The entire project was completed in August 2011.
How will customers benefit from the project?
The project, in conjunction with previously completed pump upgrades, will increase water pressure, enhance reliability, and improve fire protection. The new tank will hold 4-million gallons and will be mostly underground and surrounded by landscaping.
What did Cal Water do to lessen inconvenience to project neighbors?
- Cal Water's contractor used the quietest and least disruptive demolition approach possible.
- The new tank was constructed within the walls of the existing tank to reduce necessary demolition, excavation, and backfill, which in turn reduced construction traffic.
- Construction traffic was restricted to use of pre-approved haul routes. The approved route limited traffic to major thoroughfares, to the extent feasible, and divided truck traffic between two independent routes to minimize traffic impacts.
- As much as possible, crews limited their work hours to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., rather than the 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. required by City ordinance.
- Cal Water and its contractor took whatever steps were necessary to comply with dust and sound ordinances.
